Considering becoming a financial advisor? Are you a new financial advisor? Or looking for a new career? Being a financial advisor or financial planner will challenge you, reward you handsomely, and lead to long-term financial success. Being a financial advisor is a great career, but be warned, it's not for everyone. Here are my tips on becoming a successful financial advisor.

Go with a great firm with a good training program and a reputation of high ethics and integrity.  Society has had enough of the Bernie Madoff's of the world. Consumers are looking for a trusted advisor. Make sure that's you. So, do your homework, ask questions, and go with the best.

Be willing to put in some long hours initially. You'll have to create a foundation that includes:getting  prospects, meeting centers of influence, attending networking events, gaining investment knowledge, and a myriad of other things. Hopefully you have a supportive family, because you'll need their help in the first few years.

Be productive with your time. When many new advisors first start out they tend to be very busy but sometimes they are busy for all the wrong reasons. You will make the most progress if you are engaged in ACTIVE marketing tactics versus PASSIVE tactics. Active means being on the phone, talking to people, attending events, holding events, public speaking, and generally taking action rather than sitting at a desk and moving papers around.

Be a go-getter! Recognize that all business models in the financial advisory field have basically one thing in common: you are your own boss. It's up to you to bring in the business. No one else is going to do it for you. So be determined and take complete control of your business and your life.

Create your own personal brand. Get a handle on your 30 second commercial. Don't sound like every other advisor out there. Be creative with your spiel and stand out from the competition. Talk about a target market rather than helping all consumers with all investment issues. Be funny and be yourself. Too much seriousness makes a boring presentation.

Be willing to be an educator. This means being knowledgeable about the markets and investment opportunities, but it also means listening and asking good questions. Many advisors are too focused on doing all the talking in a one on one meeting. Be interested in other people and let them do the talking. Ask questions and go deeper. Get a handle on your communication skills.

Find a support group. No, not as in alcoholics anonymous but rather a financial industry group like the Financial Planning Association or NexGen (or NAPFA for fee only advisors).  You will meet others who are entrenched in the industry who can guide you and provide tips and information you would never come into contact with otherwise.
